The best way to learn is by doing. Before a client will hire you to for a specific kind of job, you must demonstrate what you are able to offer them. The only way to advance your portfolio and raise the level of your work then is to do personal projects in your free time. These experiments are a way to constantly push myself and learn new techniques that I can incorporate into my work. With After Effects and Cinema 4D, there really is no end to the new techniques that you can learn. The depth of these programs is what continually draws me back to them.
